Self Catering in Spain

Many travellers find that opting for self catering accommodation gives them greater freedom and independence as they travel. For those travelling as a family, booking self catering accommodation means that you don’t have to worry whether or not your children will like the hotel breakfasts and whether they will have enough space to play in their hotel room. If you’re travelling solo, as a couple or with friends, you might find that a self catering option is also more cost effective as you won’t be obliged to eat out every night if you choose not to. Without the restrictions of hotel curfews and breakfast times you are also free to organise your days as you see fit. Furthermore, going for a self catering option doesn’t mean that you have to organise everything yourself. High street travel agents should still be able to find you Gran Canaria holidays and the perfect package deal at a good price,  with a hire car included if you choose.

Seeing as Spain and the Spanish Islands are among the most popular holiday destinations with Brits, we’ve put together a quick sketch of the things you could be looking forward to on a self catering break in Spain.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that because you’re eating in some of the time you’re not getting the full Spanish culinary experience. Eating in and having picnic lunches can be two of the best ways to try a range of local produce. Simply seek out your local delicatessen and treat yourself to a feast of Spanish sausage meat, goats cheese (particularly popular on the Spanish Islands), fresh fruit and veg and locally produced olive oil. Then stop by one of the many vineyards you are sure to see on your travels, particularly if you have your own transport, and ask for a few bottles of their finest brews. If you find yourself on a major fishing island such as Gran Canaria, you might also want to look out for some fabulous seafood to serve up for supper.

Another reason to go self catering is in order to have the time, space and freedom to go for a traditional Spanish siesta if you need one. Though you might think that you can handle the heat, many people find that taking a quick nap in the afternoon, local style, during the hottest part of the day, gives them much more energy to enjoy their evening pursuits.

Self catering in the countryside is a particularly special experience. You might find yourself surrounded by acres of rolling hills and fertile farmland, with none of the usual hustle and bustle of your fellow hotel guests. If its absolute peace and quiet that you seek, self catering is certainly the way to go.
